But Kelsingra appears on no maps and they cannot get there on their own: a band of dragon keepers, hunters and chroniclers must attend them. Thymara, a Rain Wilder born with scales and claws, answers the call to become one of the dragon keepers to accompany the creatures upriver. The dragons claim an ancestral memory of a fabled Elderling city far upriver: perhaps there the dragons will find their true home. Soon, they become a danger and a burden to the Rain Wilders: something must be done. Stunted and deformed, they cannot fly some seem witless and bestial. As the dragons' plan succeeds, Thymara is offered a job as a dragon keeper, to select a dragon and tend to it and hunt for it on the journey towards Kelsingra.
